NEWS FOR THIS WEEK
1st July 2008
The new Rotary year starts with a change over meeting at the Cottage Blackwell 7 for 7.30pm
10th June 2008
President Bill Wilson welcomed Rotns James Pinder and John Berrington of the Mansfield and Mapperley clubs respectively, from whom they brought fraternal greetings. Members also gave birthday greetings to Rotns Bill Wilson and Ian Mackay.
James Pinder, representing VisionAid Overseas (VAO), received a cheque for £400 raised at a recent charity Bangladesh Buffet, and around 500 pairs of unwanted spectacles brought by members. As a practising optometrist, he said he could not over-emphasise the value of both the funds and the glasses; he expected to go on a VAO visit to Ethiopia in the spring, when local people would be taught how to do eye tests.
District Governor Roger Pursey thanked his fellow club members for their support throughout the Rotary year just ending. Rotn Ron Walker read out a letter of thanks for the club's recent £1000 donation to a Rotary borehole water wells scheme in India, and reported that Kingsway Primary School had formally presented the club with 90 filled shoeboxes, the first instalment of a 250-unit 'Love in a Box' programme that sends small presents to deprived children in eastern Europe.
