Maureen goes purple

The Rotary Clubs of Bingham and District and the Vale of Belvoir are organising local events as part of an international bid to finally stamp out Polio from the world.

Today Maureen Stockwood – Mayor of Bingham – Raised over £750 by having her hair dyed Purple!

Since Rotary began its PolioPlus programme, the number of countries where polio is endemic has declined from more than 125 in 1985 to just four in 2008. But polio is still just an air flight away from UK and Ireland. This final push to finish the job is being matched by billionaire business man Bill Gates to the tune of £22million.
Many of the local events hinge around the colour purple; this colour has a special significance as children who have been immunised have their little fingers dyed with a purple ink.

Rotary is a worldwide organisation of enthusiastic active volunteers dedicated to serving communities, both at home and abroad, and furthering world understanding. In Great Britain and Ireland alone there are more than 55,000 male and female rotarians in 1,840 clubs .Each member enjoys the opportunity to give something back to communities near and far, learn new skills, network with other business people and have a huge amount of fun.
