RIBI POLIO ERADICATION NEWSLETTER

VACCINATE TO ERADICATE

and a healthy Polio free New Year

WHO

Bruce Aylward was unable to attend the RI Institute in Cardiff but his replacement Linda Muller

brought us well and truly up to date. A copy of her presentation, both slides and text have been issued to all DEPC’s by Polio Committee members who now have a copy, equally, it is being publicised on the RIBI website.

Her recognition of Rotary’s contribution knew no bounds (see the coverage of Rotary’s commitment on page 4 of September issue of WHO’s own newsletter, Polio News). Equally she reaffirmed that all media contact by WHO identifies all the partners specifically Rotary, and the absence of a reference to Rotary in the recent Daily Telegraph article was regretted as much by them as by us.

It’s This

Close!!

Throughout the European Region, ongoing vaccination and surveillance

is vital. The risk of the Polio virus being imported into Europe will continue until we eradicate Polio globally.

Children in Need

Many of you have suggested that we make an approach to Children in Need for a contribution to the campaign. Unfortunately, whilsttheir commitment is by definition to children in all types of need, their activities are limited to events in Great Britain and Ireland.

ACN

Full details of this incredible opportunity will be mailed out shortly.

SAVE TO CONTRIBUTE what a

concept! SECRETARIES, do ensure that the application forms are simply photocopied, distributed, completed and returned. It is that simple.

Mobilise a million

Full details of this event as part of Rotary Service Week in February 2003 are separately enclosed with this newsletter.  This simple but effective concept gives a great opportunity to maximise publicity and create Rotary awareness as well as raise funds for the campaign.

Royle Patron

All of us will recognise the name of the Reverend Canon Roger Royle having heard him speak at many Rotary events. Also of course on his Sunday morning Radio 4 programme. I am delighted to tell you that he has accepted the invitation to be Patron of our campaign having originally been associated with ‘Save the Children - STOP’ Polio campaign in 1979 particularly in Malawi.

WHERE ARE WE NOW

November has been a tremendous month for contributions in RIBI lifting our total received to

£293,384

District 1010 leads the way with £40,000 in a single month. That’s the way to do it
