THANKS AGAIN!
Thanks for the invitations to come to speak to Clubs about the
Eradication Campaign and for the generous hospitality shown
Thanks for the promises of money that you hope to raise for the
campaign.
If you have not let me know of the hoped for target that you
will try to raise please let me know as soon as possible so
that I can try to estimate what the District's final figure will
be.
From the tremendous support from the vast majority of Clubs I
believe that we will achieve the District target.
Please invite us to come to speak to you if you have any
queries or doubts.
By the end of February we will have spoken to 41 Clubs.

PLEASE SEND IN FUNDS ASAP
Please do not wait until you have achieved your club target
before sending money to "RF UK Ltd. - Polio
Eradication" at RIBI, Kinwarton Road, Alcester,
Warwickshire B49 6PB but send it in instalments when you have a
reasonable amount.
There are 2 reasons for this:
1. To enable RIBI to send money to the Rotary Foundation in the
USA where investment returns are greater
2. To ensure that the Matching Funding promised by the Gates
Foundation is obtained. This is dependent on the money being
received by Foundation this Rotary Year. |

WORLD POLIO NEWS
1. Polio only recorded in 7 countries in the year
ending September 30th 2002!
India 540, Nigeria, 119, Pakistan 93, Afghanistan 6, Niger 5,
Somalia 5, Egypt 2.
The figures have been inflated by an outbreak in Northern India.
The trend is encouraging - only 7 countries and four of those
with very low levels.
2. WHO has decided that National Immunisation Days
will continue in poliofree countries bordering endemic areas or
where immunisation levels are low.
3. The importance of surveillance is shown by the fact
that 5 cases were imported into Zambia from Angola in 2001.
Follow up NIDs immunised 1million children under five.
4. Cease Fires declared in Sudan in May 2002
allowed 45 thousand children to be immunised in the Nuba region.
In Angola a cease-fire allowed previously inaccessible
areas to be reached and 4.5 million children were immunised
5. More information can be found the WHO Polio News website

ROTARY RECOGNITION
"What has been achieved since Rotary International
courageously committed to eradicate polio defies description.
Every time we see a world leader administering polio vaccine to a
child or hear about a war being stopped somewhere so children can
be vaccinated, we can thank Rotary for demonstrating how much can
be accomplished when a group selflessly uses every ounce of the
political capital at its disposal to improve the health of the
world's poorest children"
Bill Gates Sr. President of the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation

And Finally
I thank everyone for their efforts in this campaign.
I know that we will succeed.
I know that there will be many activities over the next few weeks as we
approach Christmas. Good luck in all that you plan and are doing.
Although it is rather early I wish everyone a Happy and enjoyable
Christmas and a successful and Happy New Year
