New Rotary Club, The Rotary Club of Drone Valley, celebrated its Charter Presentation on 6 June at Ringwood Hall Hotel – marking its official charter in Rotary’s Centenary Year.

The Presentation Evening saw District Governor John Kirkland formally present President Jill Bethell with the club’s Charter, and its 32 founder members officially welcomed into Rotary and presented with a Commemorative Rotary Centenary Medal.

Clubs from across District 1220 and beyond joined the club for the special event, and gifts were received by many to mark the official launch of the new Club - the first new Rotary Club in District 1220 for six years. A keynote address was also given by RIBI Past President John Hockin.

District Governor John congratulated members on the launch of the new club and everyone joined in wishing them well for the future. Thanks and congratulations were also conveyed to Dronfield Rotary Club - ‘mother’ club of Drone Valley - and Martin Beaumont and Alan Hepworth for their part in helping launch the new club.

Gifts included the President’s Jewel from The Rotary Club of Dronfield (parent club), the Senior Vice President’s Jewel from The Rotary Club of Chesterfield (grandparent club), Junior Vice President’s Jewel from Assistant Governor Lionel Howard, Secretary’s Jewel from The Rotary Club of Beeston and Wollaton Park, Treasurer’s Jewel from The Rotary Clubs of Nottingham and Sherwood Sunrisers, Visitors Book from The Rotary Club of Bakewell, Gavel from Past District Governor Neil Sharman, Large Rotary Banner (outdoor use) from The Rotary Clubs of Bolsover and Matlock, Rotarians Name Badges from Flexiprint Product Marketing, Dronfield (Betty and Rotarian Graham Wright, Past President of Rotary Club of Sheffield), District Wooden Spoon from The Rotary Club of Worksop Dukeries, and a plaque from The Rotary Club of Southwell. A table top lectern has also been pledged from The Rotary Club of Eckington and District.

President Jill Bethell said: “Many of our Rotary friends have played a very significant part in the formation of the Rotary Club of Drone Valley, and we thank everyone for their support and encouragement. Special mention must be made of D.G. John Kirkland, A.G. Alan Hepworth, District Extension Officer Stephen Kitch and Dronfield President Martin Beaumont who have all gone far beyond the call of duty in enabling us to become the latest Club in District 1220. We are very proud to be inaugurated and chartered in 2005, Rotary’s Centenary Year.”

The new Rotary Club is named after the River Drone, which flows in the valley between the fields once favoured by the wild honey bees – the community settling next to the river becoming known as Drane-field, and finally Dronfield. The River Drone continues to Chesterfield. The club title also encapsulates the membership and outreach to areas along the River Drone including Dronfield and surrounding villages down to Chesterfield.
