Schoolchildren have been sowing the seeds of the future to celebrate a landmark anniversary. Youngsters from Wigley Primary and Brimington Junior schools in Chesterfield joined Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield to plant 100 trees at Holmebrook Valley Country Park to mark the centenary of Rotary International. They were chosen to perform the honours after triumphing in a tree-themed poster competition organised by the club in conjunction with the Derbyshire Education and Business Partnership.

To mark the centenary year the Rotary Club of Chesterfield has already taken 100 pupils from Rother Junior School to the pantomime, organised a Christmas concert for 100 local old folk, distributed spring bulbs to 100 housebound pensioners, and is set to take 100 pensioners on a Spring outing to the Dukeries. Around 4,000 Derbyshire Rotarians and their families are expected to attend their own celebration at Chatsworth on Saturday June 18.

Chesterfield Rotary club president, Geoff Mitchell, said: "One hundred years is a milestone for any organisation and, as that original concept of service to others never goes out of fashion, we hope that Rotary will thrive for many years to come."

CHESTERFIELD'S CITIZEN OF THE YEAR
February 2005

A local man who has touched many young hearts with his acts of kindness has been recognised for his charity work by the Rotary Club of Chesterfield.
Richard Street, who runs the Chernobyl Children's Life Line charity in North Derbyshire, was presented with the Rotary Club's 'Citizen of the Year' Award for his hard work in bringing groups of youngsters from Belarus to enjoy the fresh air of Derbyshire.

The holidays, away from widespread contamination following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, is reckoned to put extra years on the shortened lives of the Belarus youngsters and it is all thanks to Richard Street, an employee of North East Derbyshire District Council. In nearly ten years over 200 children have enjoyed the hospitality of North Derbyshire folk.

Chesterfield Rotary Club president Geoff Mitchell said: " Rotary is proud to recognise the selfless work of Richard Street in his efforts to harness the support of the local community to host groups of unfortunate children each year."

Geoff Mitchell added: "We hold the work of the Chernobyl Children's Life Line charity in high regard and urge fellow members of the local community in North Derbyshire to support Richard Street's incredible efforts to support these innocent children."

ROTARY TREAT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

Caring Rotarians took local old folk on a mystery tour of Derbyshire for a special day out. The senior citizens from Cavendish Court, Red House and Rutland retirement homes enjoyed a coach tour through the countryside ending up with a cream tea at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton. This annual Spring Outing is arranged each year by the Rotary Club of Chesterfield as part of its ongoing support for the local community.

President Geoff Mitchell said: "We know how much the senior citizens, some who are mainly housebound, enjoy this outing and with countryside in Derbyshire there is so much pretty scenery to enjoy."
