Young Nottingham sports stars William Simpson, a badminton player ranked in the top ten in England at U15 level, together with Ruth Coleman, an England U17 badminton player, and ice skating pair Lauren Bradshaw and Mark Hanretty, members of the GB Figure Skating team, have been awarded grants by the Rotary Club of Carlton in association with SportsAid East Midlands to help them achieve their sporting dreams.

The Carlton Rotary Club has generously agreed to support the talented youngsters with awards of £250 each to help them with coaching, travel, training and accommodation costs in their chosen sports.

SportsAid is a charity working to help talented young sportspersons compete at the highest levels in their chosen sports. Awards are given to competitors who are currently ranked in the top 10 nationally of their sport or are regular members of national age group squads. Rotary, nationally, seeks to support the celebration of achievements by young people and considers this to be an excellent way to assist talented sportspersons from their locality to fulfil their dreams

Badminton player William Simpson, from Burton Joyce, is ranked No10 in England at U15 level in both singles and boys doubles. He reached the quarter-finals of the National Championships at U15 singles in 2004 and hopes to play for England at senior level in the long term.

Ruth Coleman, from Colwick, plays for the England U19 badminton team at both singles and doubles. With her doubles partner she won a silver medal in her age category at the European Championships last year. She hopes to play for England at senior level in the future.

Lauren Bradshaw and Mark Hanretty, from Gedling, were placed 2nd in the Scottish Junior Championships and 2nd at the British Junior Figure and Ice Dance Championships in 2004. They hope to compete at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
The awards were presented to the talented young people by Colin Gell, the President of the Rotary Club of Carlton, at the Vale Social Club in Colwick, Nottingham on Thursday 10 March at 6.30 pm.
