OUTWARD BOUND, ABERDOVEY MAY 14th - MAY 18th 2007
Twenty 14/15 year old students from Carlton le Willows, Frank Wheldon
and Gedling Comprehensive attended the Outward Bound Course called “ I
Can” at Aberdovey, Wales, with many of them attending our Rotary Club
meeting on 12th July to relate their experiences.
During their week’s course they did such activities as rock climbing,
trapeze, raft construction, hill walking. They also took part in an
overnight expedition where they walked with full kit on their backs into
the Welsh mountains and pitched tents and camped overnight. They cooked
in the open and carried out field crafts. The following day they
dismantled the camp and hiked back to the Outward Bound centre.
On their final day they took part in Cutter sailing in one of the
last remaining traditional sailing cutters. This enabled them to
demonstrate the importance of good communication and team work.
At the end of the course all members received a certificate to record
their week’s adventure. Three students - two girls and one boy - have
been selected to attend Outward Bound Ullswater where they will enjoy
the benefits of Outward Bound’s famous 21 day Classic course. This takes
place in July/August 2007.
All the above has been sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carlton who
have now sent over 70 young people from their area on Outward Bound
courses during the last five years. The success and popularity within
our community has ensured success of this project and the Rotary Club
intend to continue during 2008.
