West Bridgford
Christmas Fund Raising
Members have been overwhelmed, says PRO Charles Tyrie, by the public’s generosity during the run up to Christmas at the Co-op Superstore in West Bridgford. Customers have donated groceries and money to enable the Club to make up 40 Christmas hampers to distribute to the needy in West Bridgford and the Meadows, through the Friary Drop-in Centre and St Saviours Church. President Jim Silver sent his thanks to everyone who responded and to the Co-op superstore. The Club held a bucket shake at the Queens Drive Park and Ride Site, raising £1140 in aid of Age Concern and other Rotary locally supported charities. Also on the busy Christmas agenda was a house-to-house collection in the Wilford area with Father Christmas and his sleigh, when the Club collected £590 on behalf of Polio Eradication.
Derby
Support for New Nepal Cancer Lab
A new pathology laboratory has been built and equipped at the Bhaktapur cancer
care centre near Kathmandu in Nepal with the aid of £2800 provided by the Derby
Club. An additional £700 was given by District 1220. The project was a joint one
with the Rotary Club of Kantipur in Nepal which supervised and monitored the
project’s progress. A matching grant of £3500 was also provided by the Rotary
Foundation, bringing the total funding for the project to £7,000. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and only recently have cancer treatment facilities become available to many of the country’s cancer sufferers. The director of the clinic says that the laboratory has already been a great help in its work.
At the opening ceremony for the pathology laboratory on 30 October RC of Derby was represented by Dr Bibek Pradhan of the Mansfield Club, which worked with Rotary Clubs in Nepal to provide funds for setting up the Bhaktapur cancer care clinic opened in 1999; a substantial grant was also provided by the Rotary Foundation
Matlock
£4500 for Ashgate Appeal
Club JVP and PRO John Shipman reports that £3000 was raised for the Ashgate Hospice ABC appeal at a charity gala dinner attended by 242 local business and
professional people, in the prestigious surroundings of Chatsworth Carriages restaurant in November. Matlock, who are celebrating their 75th year, have contributed over £4500 this year to the Ashgate appeal - from this event, a garden party in June and their annual golf day in September - to raise funds for more beds, an out patient suite and improved day care facilities. Pres Andrew
Leadbeater welcomed Lord and Lady Varley as principal guests; Lord Varley is Vice President and Trustee of Ashgate Hospice. Opened in 1988, the Hospice
serves the North Derbyshire area, providing specialist palliative care for
people with terminal illnesses through in-patient beds, a day centre, home care and hospital support services.

West Ashfield
Busy-Busy Santa
The two weeks before Christmas saw Santa's sleigh whizzing round the ten communities along the Notts/Derbys border that make up the Club's area of operation: Blackwell, Hilcote, Huthwaite, Morton, Newton, Pinxton, Selston, South
Normanton, Stonebroom and Tibshelf. So warm is the welcome from local residents that members say it would be worthwhile even without the collecting boxes! Two weekend sessions each at the Trowell and Tibshelf motorway service stations contributed to the total of nearly £4000 going to the Club's charity account, which will fund projects over the next 12 months, mostly in the local communities. West Ashfield have recently made donations to Chernobyl Children's
Lifeline, Selston Youth Football Club and Huthwaite C of E Infants School.
Bulwell and Basford
Shocking!
The Club have had what Pres Chris Ryan describes as "a brilliant shock". Rotn
Derek Page, a member of the Salvation
Army, asked his fellow Salvationists to consider - instead of the usual gifts at Harvest Festival - going 'international' and think of filling an Aquabox or two. "Such was the response that we filled 15
Aquaboxes and have enough for another five. They have now been sent off, and
our international committee are saving their pennies to buy the remaining boxes.
Our thanks to the William Booth Memorial Hall congregation."
Amber Valley
Pedalling Against Polio
The RC of Amber Valley is now able reveal that plans are well advanced for its major fund raiser in aid of the Polio Eradication Campaign, writes John Hall. "Pedalling Against Polio" will principally involve SVP Elect Dave Allen, who has volunteered to complete a solo cycle ride from Amber Valley to Lourdes in the French Pyrenees . With the 100% backing of the Club and the active involvement of a 10-man organising, planning and support team, Dave is already in training for this marathon, scheduled to take place early in May. Although ‘visible’ sponsorship is important and being actively sought, the main fund raising thrust of this ride will take place prior to Dave’s departure and will target the public on the basis of guessing the exact distance he will ride from the Town Hall at Ripley to Lourdes. Maximum media exposure is planned, with targeted publicity at such places as the local M1 service areas and major shopping centres, malls, etc. It is hoped Dave will be seen off by the Mayor of Amber Valley and that he’ll be welcomed by his
counterpart in Lourdes. Plans are also in hand to involve, if only briefly, all the Clubs and Districts in RIBI on his way to the Channel and those en route as he continues through France. It’s also hoped that Dave may be able to provide a day by day report of his progress via the Club website and possibly local radio. Any Clubs who would like more information or may wish to offer support in any way may contact Organizing Committee Chairman PP Alan Carter on either (B) 01623 758000, (P) 01773 742798 or e-mail :

Chesterfield Scarsdale
Last Night of the Proms
After the 2001 cancellation due to Foot and Mouth, Chesterfield Scarsdale Club resurrected its famous Last Night of the Proms event with a new venue - Bolsover Castle - courtesy of English Heritage, raising in excess of £4000 for local charities. The venue is one of the finest in the area and 700 visitors enjoyed a most successful evening on one of the best nights of the summer. The music for the evening was provided by the Thoresby Colliery Brass Band; Simon Theobold sang
solos with Andrew Marples at the piano. Simon led the finale with everyone singing "Land of Hope and Glory". The event was such a success that English Heritage has invited the Club to repeat the event in 2003 on August 2nd. To book your tickets for this event contact PP Peter Beardsley (Credit card bookings accepted)

Mapperley
Float Benefits Pediatric Ward
The Club's Christmas float raised almost £5000, reports PRO David Curtis.
A donation has already been given to the Mayor of Gedling's nominated charity
for the year - the

Pediatric Ward at the City Hospital. Meanwhile Linda Siddons, the wife of
Club Member Alan, took part in an organised five day trek in Peru in aid of the Teenage
Cancer Trust - walking for over eleven hours per day. Linda alone raised over
£3100 and the whole group itself raised in
excess of £450,000 - a magnificent total.
During the last two years she herself has
raised over £11,000 and the Club have
been very pleased to support her and the
Teenage Cancer Trust. If anyone would like
any further information please contact Alan
Siddons.

Bretby
Loads-A-Money!
During 2002 the Club has been collecting foreign money, reports John Graves, mostly of countries that have adopted the euro but others as well. Currency weighing 4.5 hundredweights was transferred to the Club's contact company, which returns 75% of the value. Bretby members call this Peter's money, since it was Peter Moralee who suggested the project and found the contact. Street collections over two days have raised £443, adding to the cash attracted by the wishing wells in Burton town centre and at two garden centres. Meanwhile the Club's second Static Bike Ride of the year raised around £1400. Members and wives went on a "Grand Rotary Tour" of Southern France in the summer, including visits to RC of Les Arc Val d'Argens and part-time ex-pats on the Riviera.
Heanor
Quizzed for Polio
Three hundred pounds were raised by a quiz organised by the Club in support of the Rotary polio eradication campaign. A cheque for £1500 was presented to IPD Keith Hammond by Pres John Wood, who earlier in the same day had handed over the quiz prize of a TV set.

Keyworth & Ruddington
Ultrawheelz
After four years and £50,000-plus of fund raising the Ultrawheelz Skatepark at Platt
Lane was completed and opened earlier this year. This highly successful community project, which was helped on its way by the Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs of Keyworth & Ruddington, has been
recognised by several awards, the latest one being the highly prestigious national
Philip Lawrence Award.
Four of the young skaters (accompanied by two of the Trustees Vandra Stewart and Gill Riley, the head teacher of South Wolds School and other supporters from Keyworth) went to London on 2-3 December to collect their award. It was a fantastic couple of days for them, with a visit to meet Ken Clarke at the House of Commons and watch proceedings from the Speakers' Gallery. This was followed by a trip on the London Eye - up in daylight and down at dusk! On the day of the presentation, the group met the VIPs including Frances Lawrence and Sir Trevor MacDonald and - best of all -received their awards, which included a cheque for £1000.
Thanking the Club for its support,
{picture}The Ultrawheelz Skate Park in action
Rotn Gordon Riddler, Chairman of the Ultrawheelz Trust says: "This is a project which has been well received and has contributed to the local police programme for engaging youth in the community. It has now been nationally acclaimed which reflects well on Rotary and is something of which we can be truly proud."

Swadlincote
Trips Down Memory Lane
The Club entertained over 300 pensioners at their annual ''Sounds Christmas'' held at Gresley Old Hall, whose band provided the music. Swadlincote also took a group of senior citizens to Sudbury Hall as part of the Club's "Seniors Out" project. After a tour around the Hall the party enjoyed a trip down memory lane as they visited the Children's Toy Museum where they were able to relive their childhood memories. This was followed by afternoon tea in the restaurant.

Hope Valley
Life-saving Skills
Hope Valley Rotarians went back to school to learn some essential life-saving skills. Their tutors were youngsters from the Hope Valley Division of St John Ambulance who demonstrated how to perform CPR (the kiss of life), how to place patients in the recovery position and how to deal with severe external bleeding. The St John Ambulance contingent were at the Club's weekly meeting to receive a £250 cheque towards the Challenger Ambulance appeal. The cash was raised
by Rotns Barrie Campbell and Susan Enfield who recently completed the 20- mile Byron Walk in Notts.

Bakewell
Pictures Galore
The assiduous correspondents at Bakewell have created an editorial problem – which of the six captioned photos they sent should be used in the ever space-constricted Rotary Review? Answer: one photo and one article – but not necessarily on the same subject!
{PICTURE}
The Club has once again dipped into its charity funds to make a significant contribution to a mini ambulance for one of its favourite projects, the Yakkum Rehabilitation Centre for disabled young people in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia. Bakewell Rotary was asked to join two other Rotary Clubs in Japan and Indonesia to raise US$ 8000 (£5500) to buy a Mini Ambulance for the Centre. These contributions were doubled by a Matching Grant from The Rotary Foundation. At the Centre young people are first given medical treatment to deal with their disability i.e. operations, prostheses or wheelchairs, then given primary education and finally, vocational training to enable them to stand on their own feet in the community. The Centre receives no government funding and has to rely on donations and on the income received from sales of handicrafts made by the young people either in their own homes or in the Centre's
workshops. [Story by John Robinson, photo by Derek Harrison]
Carlton
A Busy Winter
Having completed a year in a new venue, writes PRO David Styles, recent successes
include two new members. with the
prospect of further recruitment following the Open Evening on 27th
February. Santa’s sleigh raised over £9000 for the second year in
succession, which should
allow the Club to equal last year’s effort of 35 separate donations to
worthy causes and charities. Pres Derek Ringer continues the emphasis on
young people with four youngsters sponsored to attend Outward Bound courses,
two on Rotary Young Leader’s Award programmes and the presentation of
Rotary logo football shirts for two local teams. Efforts continue to
establish a Rotaract Club. However, the greatest achievement has been that
of Rotn Peter Menhennet who was awarded the MBE in the New Year's honours
list for his services over 25 years to the Gedling branch of the Leukaemia
Research fund.
Ripley
Presentation Evening
The Club held a presentation evening at the Marehay Miners' Welfare to
present cheques to the Prince's Trust and local charities. The money was
raised by a walk organised by the Club and covered in its entirety by Pres
Peter Lord and his wife Rosie. They were joined at stages throughout the
walk by members of local Rotary Clubs. The walk took 14 days, covered a
distance of some 225 miles
{picture}
and raised £5575. On behalf of the Club the Lord Lieutenant of
Derby, Mr John Bather, and his wife made presentations to Ken Trail
(Princes' Trust), David Anstead (Mill Hill Schools) and Marie Smith (Shirland
Training Band). A donation was also made to the Ripley Saturday Club. Thanks
were also extended to the main sponsors of the walk, the Duke of Devonshire
and the Derbyshire Building Society. Among those present were DG John
Bendall and members of the Rotary Clubs of Bakewell, Belper, Hope Valley,
Ilkeston, Keyworth & Ruddington, Melton Mowbray Belvoir, Northampton and
Nottingham. Musical entertainment was provided by the Shirland Training
Band. Pictured with DG John Bendall are (l to r) are Presidents Tony

Kirkby in Ashfield
A Rewarding Day
Gordon Sugg reports: On November
16th we held a Cheese and Wine
Evening at the home of one of our
lady members, Frances Stein, and
raised £56O for Polio Eradication,
which allowed us to present a cheque
for £1700 to PDG Keith Hammond as
our contribution when he came talk to
us. December 6th was the busiest day
of the year for the Club with our
Annual Christmas Carnival - the l6th
year. The day started with 12
members meeting for breakfast at
9am to make last minute
arrangements, and finished at 10 pm
with a fantastic fireworks display.
Streets closed from 6 to 10 pm. Lots
of on-street entertainment and
fairground rides for the kids.
Altogether a very rewarding day. [See
back page for more photos –Ed]
On Monday 9th Stephen Foulks
gave an organ concert at St Wiltrid's
Church Hall for 120 Senior Citizens.
With mince pies and tea topped up by
a spot of whisky, the evening was very
much appreciated by all who
attended. After taking Santa Claus
round the streets of Kirkby for five
evenings, December 21st saw our
usual monthly 60s disco and a sell out
at the Festival Hall - a big help for our
charity account. We also had three
new members join us. On Friday
December 20th Kirkby-in-Ashfield
Light Operatic Society gave a concert.
Two of our members, Phil Hurt and
Eric Thompson, sang a duet and PP
Ray Sayer gave a short talk about
polio eradication which was followed
by a collection raising £348.
