District
Governor Roger was born in Bristol in 1946 and lived in Patchway just
north of Bristol. His family ran a hairdressing business and a clock and
jewellers in Bristol City Centre.
The oldest of 5 children who all still live in the West Country Roger likes to get to Bristol when he can to see them and his mother who at 85 and she still does WRVS work and delivers library books to “the old folks” He was a member of 41st Bristol Boys Brigade until he left school at 17. He was educated at Thornbury Grammar School, Gloucestershire and started work in 1963 at Royal Insurance in central of Bristol. Roger moved with Royal Insurance to Chester in 1966, to Southport in 1969 and Liverpool in 1971. He moved with Royal Insurance to Sutton in Ashfield in 1972 as a Resident Inspector and subsequently worked in Mansfield and in the Nottingham office for Royal. In 1963 he left the Royal and started his own Insurance Brokerage in Kirkby in Ashfield which he ran for 21 years until he sold to the Equity Insurance Group in 2004. Originally working for them on a part time basis he is now full time and is a Regional Centre Manager for the Commercial Division of the Company. His area stretches across the Midlands from Norfolk to Warwickshire and north to Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Humberside and he is based in Heanor. DG Roger was chairman of Sutton in Ashfield Round Table in 1979/80 he subsequently served on the Area Executive for Round Table Area 7. At the age of 40 he left table and joined the new club in Ravenshead which was being formed in 1986. He held several positions I the new club and was President in 1993/4. He moved to Kirkby Club in 2000. Roger has served on the District since 1994 as a member of the District Vocational Committee and then as it’s Chairman, Youth Activities Chairman and Assistant Governor as well as of course DGN & DGE. Roger is married with 2 grown up children and a grandson who at the start of his year as Governor was 3 months old. He is a season ticket holder at Nottingham Forest although he says that he always looks for the result of his home town club Bristol City. |
