The District Governor

Writes

(as reported in the October Rotary Review)

As I write this message we are all shocked and saddened by the brutal killing of Marian Bates, wife of Victor, a past president of Nottingham North and now of Mapperley Rotary Club. Our thoughts and prayers are with Vic and his family as this time.

By the time the you read this Conference will be over and I would like to record my thanks to P.D.G. Roy and the Conference Committee for all their hard work in arranging what I am sure will have been another successful visit to Southport, somewhat different to last year but I hope nevertheless enjoyed by all.

We have in the District the G.S.E. Team from District 6800, Mississippi and Tennessee and some will have heard their presentation at Southport. They will be with us until 24th October so if you missed them at Southport you have many more chances to meet and hear them. We are now looking for team members for the return visit during DGE John's year as Governor. If you know of any young executive, aged 25-40 with the necessary time commitment, please encourage them to apply to Don Mackenzie (Mansfield).

R.I.B.I. President Brian Stoyel and Maxine (Father and Mother Pilgrim) visit our District 21st - 23rd October 2003 and a full programme has been arranged. President Brain would like to meet as many members in the District as possible so why not attend one of the Clubs where he will be speaking:
Tuesday 21st - Kirkby-in-Ashfield - Lunch; Hucknall Charter - Evening; Wednesday 22nd - Bakewell (at Carsington) - Lunch: Mapperley - Evening; Thursday 23rd - Derby Daybreak -Breakfast; Warsop - Evening.

There will also be visits to Aquabox, Chatsworth, the Rotary Wood, Babworth Church and other local places of interest during the visit.

Contributions to Polio Eradication continue to come in with now in excess of £113.000.00 donated. A wonderful achievement and great credit to P.D.G. Keith and his Committee for their work in this field.

Rainbow Children's Hospice Walks for Life were well supported by Clubs and individual Rotarians as registrars, marshals and walkers, one Rotarian walker in his 70s raising over £500.00.

From my first three months in the hot seat it has become very apparent that Clubs are LENDING A HAND and I am sure that come May 2004 I shall have a very difficult task in deciding the recipients of the awards for the Year.

Membership appears to be on the increase although losses are occurring. Retention should be the by-word by keeping everyone active and involved. If we are all Dedicated Rotarians, Enthusiastic and Motivated we shall live up to President Jonathan's title of the DREAM Team.

The Festive Season is now not too far away and I take this opportunity of wishing you and your families a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful and Successful 2004.

Neil
