The District Governor's closing remarks

Thanks for a Wonderful Year

I was invited to join the Rotary Club of Bingham and District some 21 years ago, never thinking beyond the Club, making new friends and having fun whilst giving Service to the Community at large.

The various Club Offices and Committees were held with little thought about any further progression in District or anything beyond Club President.

Arms get twisted, occasionally one volunteers not realising where the paths end, and three years ago the path to become Governor of District 1220 started.

It has been a privilege to be Governor of this vibrant District. A great deal is achieved in the Clubs thanks to good leaders, both this year and many before, laying solid foundations. Thanks to all the New Centurion Presidents and the Club members for all their hard work and support. Thanks to the district team for their support both to me and the District. Margaret and I have met some wonderful people not only in this District, but around the world, and it has been a privilege.

Highlights are many but Conference at Scarborough, the Link Weekend, Link Evening, two Children of Courage Award Lunches during the year, the enthusiasm and the talent of the youngsters in the many Youth Activities of Young Musician, Young Chef, Youth Speaks, and RYLA and many more. The visits to all Clubs and the Club Charters were all enjoyable. The hospitality was tremendous.

The final club visit and another highlight was to Wirksworth on the 29th June when I had the honour of presenting the Service above Self award to Frank Lund for his work for Aquabox. (Details are elsewhere)

Your support for Mercy Ships and Hearing Dogs has been magnificent. The totals so far raised in RIBI are £570,000 and £275,000 respectively and I know these will increase . The new ophthalmic theatre is now assured for “Africa Mercy” and great awareness as well as money has been made for both Charities.

The RI projects of Literacy, Water, Health and Hunger projects, and the Family of Rotary have all been supported, as has the membership target of one new member net. Over 125 new Rotarians are now with us and the job of mentoring them and involving them into the fellowship of our Clubs is important.

But all of this is very serious stuff and Rotary is not just about Service and fund raising. Without the fun and fellowship that weld us together there would be no Service to others. We need that mixture of fellowship and fun as the Service follows naturally.

My personal thanks go to Margaret for her support and involvement. Thanks to the Rotarians in my own club and also the Vale of Belvoir for their continuing support and to Newark Castle for support at Conference.

All the best to David and the incoming team as they Lead the Way.

Thanks again for the honour and the privilege of being your Governor for 2005-6. It has been enjoyable, the fellowship has been tremendous and the friendships made this year will add to the many already made in Rotary

Yours in Rotary Friendship and Fellowship
Rex
