July 2002

DG John Bendall

Welcome to this my first newsletter of our Rotary year 2002 - 2003
The year when the world announced that Rotary had fulfilled its promise and Polio had been eradicated thanks to your club efforts. We had exceeded our District goal and raised in excess of £100,000
The year :
* with the chartering of TWO new Rotary clubs
* with a NET increase in excess of 10% in our District membership
* with THREE new Rotaract clubs and TWO new Interact clubs formed
* when 1000 attended District Conference
* 10 applied to be team members of the GSE team to Brazil
* We are well forward in our Centennial Celebrations in 2005
It is going to be a great year.

THANK YOU Trent Bridge Rotary Club in being the first club in our District to make a donation in excess of £2000 for our Polio Eradication Fund - district target £100,000.

A sincere thankyou from the children of the world.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION - 2005
Rotary will soon be having a birthday and it will take three years to plan the celebration. When in Anaheim we were given the role in preparing for the anniversary events in 2005.
A Centennial Celebration committee has been formed under the Chairmanship of John Kirkland DG Nominee, with John Bendall, Brian Darlison, Neil Sharman, Arnold Crosby, Peter Thorpe, Kim Holmes, David Curtis, Mike Neville, and Assistant Governors
Some clubs have started discussing their plans others it is not on the schedule. It is recommended that each club nominate a Centennial Officer, your JVP, who will be Club President in our year of celebration.
Rotary International is looking for each club or groups of clubs to plan ad complete a worthwhile community project It should be a permanent facility or resource in our communities to be named Rotary Centennial Project. All proposed projects to be registered by 30th June 2003

DISTRICT COUNCIL JULY 25th
When I returned from attending the Rotary Convention I was saddened to learn of the death of PDG Canon Robert Warburton MBE
As the Thanksgiving Service at Southwell Minister was scheduled on the date of the District Council, my first decision as your District Governor was to change the date of District Council.
It was my wish to be at the service and I know that of many of you would also wish to pay respects. Robert was not only a distinguished Rotarian but also much respected and loved throughout in his Ministry vocation.
A Man of God who sowed seeds of Love and service throughout his community and our world.

BARCELONA CONVENTION 2002
It was good to see so many of you in Barcelona, around 800 from RIBI, total registration in excess of 19,000 from some 140 countries.
The highlights would be the opening session with entertainment Spanish style and the speech by Mikhail Gorbachev Former Soviet Union President who praised Rotary as an organization that can achieve results, as it is Non Governmental.
An opportunity to make new friends and learn of Rotary activities in the world.

DISTRICT WEB SITE
We were sorry to receive the resignation of Tony Eley as our Web Master. Over 6 years Tony has given many hours of Rotary Service encouraging us to be more computer literate, communicate through our E Mail addresses and develop our Web Sites. There are not many Rotarians that have had such an effect on us all. Thank you Tony for your dedication and commitment.
Tony had resigned as chairman of the Communications committee, but planned to continue as webmaster. Health has resulted in him taking a step back.
We welcome Mark Snape from Ravenshead.
