Wednesday 13th November 2002
The day RIBI President Tony de St Dalmas and his wife Peggy together with DG John Bendall and his wife Anne visited Walter & Elizabeth Hayes. Little were we to know that within 6 weeks both had passed away.

There have been many tributes and those who attended the Celebration Service would have heard of Walter's involvement not only in Rotary but also in the community of Beeston. As the Nottingham Evening Post said ' He was one of Beeston's best-known citizens and surely the most loved. He was the longest serving Rotarian in the UK, founder of the first Rotary club in Beeston with over 60 years of service. A Freeman of the Borough, founder of Beeston Operatic Society and Beeston Round Table.

Short Tribute to Rotarian Walter Hayes
Let me tell you about Walter Hayes the Rotarian. It is no exaggeration to describe Walter as a Rotary icon. He became a Rotarian in his thirties and was member of Beeston Club for the next 60 glorious years. I was very proud to obtain on Walter's behalf a '60 year membership certificate of honour' from the President of Rotary International himself.
Walter was one of the most active Rotarians you could imagine. Both in his club and in the District he was always there, usually with camera at the ready. His long running editorship of the Beeston Bulletin brought national awards to the club.

Personally Walter was a friend of long standing. Over the last 25 years Walter would give me a monthly telephone call. His cheery voice would announce ' Hello, Bill, Walter here'.
Then he would very expertly extract the latest Rotary news, and a couple of weeks later there it

would be in the bulletin. Sometimes even things I had not said.

Walter was devoted to working for The Rotary Foundation, which is Rotary's own charity, and will be remembered, for his organization of the annual Link Evening. The Rotary Foundation has a massive scholarship programme, and students from all over the world travel for a year's study at foreign universities. Those who came to this District would be recognized with a special dinner. Walter was the strength behind its success.

Walter exemplified the Rotary ideal of service, and was living example of the Rotary motto in action; truly, Service above Self. We will miss him, but we will count ourselves more blessed because of Walter's life and service to humanity.

He was a man; take him for all in all
We shall not look upon his like, again."

Bill Huntley President of Rotary International 1994-1995 Past District Governor District 1220, Past President of Stapleford & Sandiacre Rotary Club
