News of events in Libya have taken up most of the
headlines in recent weeks but the humanitarian disaster in the Horn of
Africa continues, with thousands at risk of dying from lack of food and
water and millions on the move to find a safe haven. Over 6000 Shelter
Boxes have already been sent with more on the way and Aquabox is sending
500 boxes into Kenya for use in refugee camps. Before going to San Diego
last year Lorraine and I spent a week in Florida with other 2011/12
District Governors and one of these was Eric Kimani from District 9200,
which covers all of the countries affected by this disaster. He has set
up a Rotary District Disaster Fund not only to bring immediate relief to
the area but to look at the longer term needs, and details can be found
on the RIBI website. If your Club can help bring hope to these people
please consider supporting one of the above projects. I am grateful to IPDG Val for working with the Mayor of Nottingham and the Royal British Legion, to encourage the Rotary Clubs in Nottingham to help with the “Poppy Appeal”. Because of a lack of active members the Royal British Legion has been struggling to get boxes distributed and have the collection points covered, but Rotary has come to the rescue and is now actively involved. We will certainly receive recognition for this support and I hope this may be extended to cover other areas of our District next year. September 5th was the start of the Club Charter season with the 73rd Charter Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Alfreton. These events are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the service that Clubs give locally and worldwide, but as we look at the past let us also look to the future to ensure our Clubs continue to be strong, by representing our communities in gender, race and classification. September is New Generation Month, so now is the time to plan your support for the many Youth Opportunity projects being organized by Tony Storer and his committee. These include:- RYLA, Young Musician, Youth Speaks, Young Photographer, and Young Chef. Also please support Steve Moores who is driving both Rotaract and Interact Club growth. September 21st (as well as being District Council) is International Peace Day. This is now recognized in nearly all parts of the world and is a day when rebels, warring factions and even terrorists lay down their arms for the day. One huge benefit is that on this day Aid Agencies can get into areas where it is normally unsafe and even Polio Immunization can be carried out. Let us make this a day of Peace in our own communities, for Peace has to start with individuals before spreading round the world. A date for the diary is May 15th 2012 when District 1220 will be holding a Race Meeting at Southwell Racecourse. All the races have been sponsored by, or through, Rotary and therefore the event will be advertised as a ROTARY RACE MEETING, giving awareness of Rotary to the general public. All Clubs will be given tickets and asked to sell them to their members and friends. ALL the ticket money will go to Polio Eradication. For now, just book the date and more information will follow. The first of the District competitions has taken place and the Rotary Club of Hucknall won the Outdoor Bowls. It was a very closely fought competition with the final end being the decider. Well done Hucknall and thanks to Mike Storr for organizing the day so well. Our District Conference is just a few weeks away and Lorraine and I look forward to welcoming you all to Scarborough, once again attendance will be very healthy with approx. 900 registered. Until then, “Always look on the bright side of life”. DG Gordon |
