Welcome to the 2011/12 Rotary year and I wish all the new club officers every success for the year ahead. I have pleasure in sending you the greeting of Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee and RIBI President Ray Burman. Ray will be visiting the District in February 2012, and I know he is looking forward to meeting as many members as possible.

Because of the current economic climate I have asked clubs to look at the needs of their local communities and as I read through the Club Assembly Reports I can see a huge amount of activities planned. Having said that, we must be mindful of our commitments to International Projects including the current crisis in the Horn of Africa and of course the Polio ‘Bill Gates Challenge’. This is the final year of the campaign and I ask you all to fulfill the pledge you made two years ago as we must complete it by the end of this Rotary year.

August will be ‘Membership Month’ and this is key to the future of our organization. I can see that many clubs have potential members in the pipeline so let us make a real effort to bring them in as full members and at the same time don’t forget to take to club that friend you have been planning to invite for some time.

One of the highlights of any Rotary year is the District Conference and you will be aware that this is to be held in Scarborough from 30th September to 2nd October 2011. We always have good attendances at our Conference because a lot of work goes into planning good speakers and entertainment. The Spa Conference Centre has now completed the improvements and there are also a number of good value hotels available in the town. I encourage you and your partners to attend and have a great weekend.

At the end of the last Rotary year the Market Place in Nottingham was alive with Rotarians for the ‘Rotary Roadshow’. The general public were able to see and hear about the work of Rotary and speak directly to members. We had a number of enquiries from people interested in membership and these have been passed to clubs and contact made. I hope this event will take place again next year in Nottingham and would encourage group of clubs to consider planning a similar event in areas such as Derby, Burton, Chesterfield and Newark. The District Communications and Marketing Team have all the equipment you need (including gazebos) and will be pleased to assist in the planning. Please talk to your AG who will be pleased to point you in the right direction.

Finally, will Club treasurers please make life easy for District Treasurer Malcolm by sending your subscriptions in on time.

Enjoy the year ahead and remember “Always look on the bright side of life”.
