Here we are at the start of another year and I would like
to take this opportunity to wish all Rotarians and their families a
happy and healthy New Year. There is no doubt that 2012 is going to be a
challenging year for us all, but as difficult as it may be for us it
will be even harder for those less fortunate than ourselves. In July
last year I asked Clubs to look at the needs of their local communities
and as I visit Clubs and read your bulletins I am amazed at the response
you are giving locally. Thank you for all you have done and please keep
up the good work, the need has never been greater. Of course we are part of Rotary International and therefore Clubs also support many International projects, but remember our priority is to meet the Bill Gates Polio Challenge. Some Clubs have already achieved their target, but let us all make a final push so that in years to come we can say we played our part in freeing the world of this crippling disease. Those who attended the District Council meeting earlier this month will have heard about the proposed changes in the structure of RIBI. Currently the governing body is the General Council which consists of 35 members and 30 of these change each year. In this modern day this is not the most efficient or cost effective method and therefore the proposal is to replace the General Council with a Management Committee of 14 Rotarians who will be selected for their skills and each will serve for a maximum of 3 years. Please vote in favour of this at the business meeting during the RIBI Bournemouth Conference. More information will be issued to Clubs shortly. We are now half way through the Rotary Year and I would suggest that all clubs review their Club Assembly Reports to see how many of your goals have been achieved. It is also the time of the year when we start preparing for the next Rotary Year and in the next few days David Ashley will be on his way to San Diego for his final training. Soon after his return President Elects will be attending their training (PETS), please support David by attending this important meeting. In my December Newsletter I told you I planned to visit companies and organisations to create awareness of Rotary. If you know a company that would benefit from a visit please let me know. Looking ahead, February is World Understanding month and March in Literacy month. Please remember these when putting your club programmes together. Please also book the dates for the Link Evening on Thursday 8th March and the Paul Harris Lunch on Sunday 25th March, both at the Novotel. Watching the evening news and reading the daily papers can be depressing but remember, “Always look on the bright side of life”. DG Gordon |
