GSE News Update
October 2005
Change as from
October 26th to our District Team to Visit D-3150 India.
|
| They say “it never rains but it pours”. Well that’s
true this week in more ways than one! On Sunday October 23rd I
posted a web update with the sad news that Rami Seth had withdrawn
from the Team Leader Post on health grounds but that Terry Leivers
was taking over. The team was now once again “all set and ready to
go!”
Wrong again!! On Tuesday October 25th I received a letter from
Becky Brown informing me that she had to withdraw from the team “for
personal reasons”. I am truly sorry for Becky, but her reasons are
perfectly valid and understandable. I am sure we would all wish her
well in the future.
Fortunately one of the candidates, Hannah, for the exchange with
West Virginia was also interested in the exchange with India and has
agreed to join that team. Her details are below, replacing those of
Becky.
I sincerely hope this is it!!

Change as from
Friday October 21st to our District Team to Visit D-3150 India.
|
| Hardly had the ink dried on the website,
metaphorically speaking, before I received some very very sad news
from the team leader, Past District Governor Dr. Rami Seth. He was
faced with an unexpected medical catastrophe which made it
impossible for him to travel to India. District Governor Rex,
members of the Foundation Committee and I were devastated with this
terrible news. I am sure that the whole of the district will join
me in extending to Rami, Jenny and all their family our prayers and
best wishes for strength in the days to come and a successful
outcome to the treatment.
Rami was so looking forward to leading this trip and had already
done much work in readiness for it. He is adamant, however, that
although he will not be with the team in body he will be in spirit
and that he will continue to help them in their preparation.
We are fortunate that the vice-chairman of the GSE Committee,
Terry Leivers, who is to become GSE Officer from 2006-7, has been
able to reorganise his personal commitments at short notice and take
over the Leader’s role. Terry had been closely involved with the
preparation of the programme for the incoming team and knows them
well. He was also on the selection panel for our team and so knows
their background. He is thus “well up to flying speed!”
Terry's details are below - replacing Rami.
Fond Farewell
|
 |
Friday October 21st witnessed another emotional
moment: bidding farewell to our new found friends from India at the
“Farewell Party”, their last official engagement. Everyone, hosts
and visitors alike, agreed that it had been a most memorable month
in which we all experienced a new culture, learned a lot about each
other’s country and enjoyed exciting and rewarding moments.
|
| The team has now embarked on a
whirlwind tour of Europe before returning home to India. Before he
left, Madhav wrote an article for the Derby Evening Telegraph,
reproduced here with
permission - it is a marvellous plug for GSE.
We wish them “bon voyage”, a safe journey home and every
happiness and success in the future. We will meet again!

Group Study Exchange
Good News and Double Opportunities
The Rotary Foundation has announced the return to exchanges being
completed in One Rotary Year.
Exchanges had always been concluded in one Rotary Year up to and
including 2002-3, the year we received a team from Brazil in
September 2002 and sent our team back to Brazil in April 2003.
Straightforward and easy to understand and organise!
But then it was announced that because of the shortage of funds,
from 2003-4 onwards, exchanges funded by the “World Fund” - the
central funding of GSE by Rotary Foundation which entitles every
district to an exchange irrespective of their contributions - would
be every other year, with a team visiting another District one
Rotary Year and the return taking place the next. Still with me?
So in September 2003, the Rotary year 2003-4, we received a team
from District 6800 Mississippi-Tennessee, USA, comprising leader PDG
George Rosentreter , Cynthia Stanley, Debbie Stevens, Wayne LeeLoy
and Robert Skelton. Remember them?
Our team, comprising leader Rtn. David Hagues, Charlotte Kerry,
Helen Ryder, Mathew Mitchell and Stephen Wilson is thus scheduled to
visit District 6800 in the Rotary Year 2004-5 and in fact is due to
depart on Saturday April 9th and return on Sunday May 8th this year.
We wish them bon voyage and an exciting and rewarding trip.
We were thus not entitled to a world funded exchange for 2004-6,
but District 7550 West Virginia was! As we were, however, entitled
to “buy” our part through our DDF using the credit from the
cancelled trip to Israel, District Governor Elect John Kirkland
agreed an exchange with D-7550 for 2004-6.
Thus in September 2004 we received a team from West Virginia
comprising leader Rtn. Ted Williams, Michael Christie, Amber Hoback,
Julie Johnson and Leah Spencer.
|
|
Our team is due to make the return
visit from May 3rd to June 3rd 2006, and we are now recruiting!
We were not expecting an exchange in 2005-6 until the
announcement of the return to annual exchanges.
In consequence, an exchange with District 3150 Andhra Pradesh,
India has been agreed for 2005-6, with their team visiting us from
Saturday 24th September until Saturday 22nd October.
All clubs have been contacted to ascertain their interest in
taking part in the visit here. Our team will return to India from
January 3rd to February 1st 2006, before we complete the exchange
with D 7550.
And so the double opportunity to be a team leader or a team
member as we recruit the teams for India and West Virginia at the
same time. Applicants will be asked to indicate whether they wish to
be considered for one team or the other or for both.
Team Leader applications should be in to me by July 8th latest!
Interviews will be held on Saturday and/or Sunday July 30th/31st.
Team member applications should be in to me by September 1st
latest!
Interviews will be held on Saturday and Sunday September 17th/
18th.
Application forms for both leaders and members may be obtained
from me or downloaded from the Rotary Website www.rotary.org
Interested in being a team leader? Then why not apply?
In any event, I am sure your club knows of potential team
members, who must be between the ages of 25 and 40. Contact them
now! Further information is available from me.
