I extend a very warm
welcome to you all from the Rotarians and their families from, what is
known to many as the 'Robin Hood' Country, District 1220 in the heart of
England with 57 Clubs and a little short of 2000 members. I trust that
you will have an enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding stay in our
District, learning our culture and teaching us some of yours so that we
both may better understand more about our respective countries.
There will be plenty of opportunities for
Vocational study in your chosen subjects and I am sure that your
Vocational days have been well planned. These will give you an insight
into our ways and I expect that you will be able to take back many ideas
to your homeland.
To many, Group Study Exchange is one of the
highlights of our year and I am sad that due to financial restrictions
The Foundation has had to change the programme to a two-year cycle
instead of the traditional annual event. In many years of association
with G.S.E. I have seen team members grow in stature from the experience
gained and many lasting friendships have developed. I met your Governor
Rotarian Kenneth R. Bender in Anaheim and we quickly became friends
meeting many times during the Assembly.
District 1220 is one of many contrasts. It
consists of the whole of Nottinghamshire, most of Derbyshire (except the
Peak District) and a little of both Staffordshire --- Burton-on-Trent
the brewing capital of England, and Leicestershire --- Castle Donington
with its East Midland Airport and Donington Park car and motor cycle
race track. Two major cities, Nottingham and Derby, are complemented by
towns and villages steeped in history down the centuries, with several
waterways, notably the river Trent, flowing through both counties. The
countryside offers flat farming areas to the East and South which during
World War 2 housed many airfields, some staffed by your country's men
and women, and to the West and North the ground rises into the foothills
of the Pennines the backbone of England.
We look forward to your presentation at the
District Conference in Southport and to your visits to Clubs around the
District which will provide you all with a superb opportunity of making
friends, not only of Rotarians, but their families and their friends, in
our District. Arch Klumph's vision of a world improved through better
world understanding is the one of the foundations of G.S.E. and everyone
can learn so much from the Exchange, sharing and exchanging ideas as we
work towards our goal of a World at Peace.
Do enjoy yourselves and let us Lend a
Hand to each other to further International Relationships. |
